Oklahoma State stuns Kansas, 1-0, in Big 12 soccer semifinals

? The Big 12 Conference soccer tournament wasn’t the place to be for the top seeds.

Following suit of the other upper-echelon teams, third-seeded Kansas University was upended by No. 7 Oklahoma State, 1-0, Friday night in a Big 12 semifinal game at Blossom Soccer Stadium.

In just their second appearance at the league tourney, the Cowgirls (14-4-3) will face eighth-seeded Missouri in the championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Oklahoma State was aggressive from the start, earning three corner kicks in the first five minutes.

The Cowgirls continued to pound away at the 21st-ranked Jayhawks until Cassie Lewis scored the game-winner at the 37:15 mark. Nikki Wojtowicz lobbed the ball to Lewis, who buried it in the left side of the net after KU’s Meghan Miller dove to the right.

Kansas did mount a furious rally. With 30 minutes left in the second half, KU took four shots inside the six-yard box resulting in a save by Kathrin Lehmann and a Jayhawk corner.

On the ensuing play, OSU defender Lisa Fulton made a phenomenal save on the goal line when Lehmann went down. Lehmann finished with five saves in earning her seventh shutout.

The Cowgirls held a slight 16-14 shot advantage. KU took 10 to OSU’s eight in the second half, but the Cowgirl defense proved to be too much.

The Jayhawks (16-5-1) still are optimistic they’ll receive an NCAA Tournament invitation early next week. First- and second-round games are Friday and Nov. 16 at on-campus sites.
