  • The University Bridge Club announces winners of its Nov. 1 game. Dale and Wanda Kring were hosts.

Blue winners were Alice Akins, first; Don Whitaker, second; Tom Waller, third; Carl Schaake, fourth; and George Bocquin, fifth.

Pink winners were Jean Whitaker, first; Lois Liebert, second; Ailene Bocquin, third; Jane Golden, fourth; and Florence McNicoll, fifth.

  • Soroptimist International of Lawrence is seeking applicants for two educational awards. The Women’s Opportunity Award assists women who need financial assistance to enter the work force or upgrade their employment status.

The club is granting a $1,000 award and $500 award at the club level.

  • Knights of Columbus Lawrence Council 1372 had its annual Tootsie Roll drive Oct. 10-12 in Lawrence. Forty-two members and 17 children participated in the fund-raiser. The club announced it raised 40 percent more than in the 2002 drive. Twenty percent of the money will help sponsor the Special Olympics basketball tournament in Hays, and the rest will benefit Lawrence-based programs that work with people who have disabilities.
  • The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club celebrated its 10th anniversary with a two-session unit championship game at Alvamar Country Club. The game was attended by 17 tables of players. Dinner was served between sessions. The board that formed the club was comprised of Jerry Sloan, Glenna Herd, Virginia Seaver, Mildred Linley, Julia Brooks and Eldon Herd.

The game was stratified and directed by Virginia Seaver.

Flight B — Curt Soloff and Amit Chakrabarti, first; Steven Phelps and Vernon Gregg, second; Carol Ball and Mona Bell, third; Clyde Romer and Lynn Hui, fourth; Linda Randall and Linda Swain, fifth; and Elizabeth Amsbaugh and Barbara Merriam.

Flight C — Carol Ball and Mona Bell, first; Linda Randall and Linda Swain, second; Gladys Dixon and Adeline Towle, third; and Albert Ballard Jr. and Emily Foster, fourth.
