Former Baby Jay establishes mascot fund

Thanks to the creators of Kansas University’s Baby Jay, a fund has been established to make sure KU’s mascots look well-groomed.

Amy Hurst Rachman, who came up with the idea for Baby Jay in 1971, has given $5,000 to the KU Endowment Assn. to establish the Original Baby Jay Mascot Fund, KU announced Friday.

The fund will help defray the costs of the mascot program, including purchasing and maintaining the costumes for Big Jay and Baby Jay.

Rachman’s mother, Marti Daniels Hurst of Boca Raton, Fla., has committed an additional $57,000 for the fund through her estate plans.

Rachman designed and built the first Baby Jay costume, which she wore for three years at events.
