Emporia man sentenced to nearly 60 years in kidnapping case

A half dozen officers dressed in riot gear had to forcibly remove an Emporia man who became violent during his sentencing before a Douglas County judge Tuesday.

And after he was hauled out, Scott Staggs was given a sentence of nearly 60 years in prison for his role in the March kidnapping of Josh Greemore from the Jayhawk Motel.

Greemore, a 21-year-old from Mayetta, had been beaten, stabbed and bound, then dumped in Riverfront Park for dead.

Staggs, 34, one of five suspects in the kidnapping, had to be brought to court by force Tuesday morning. Once inside, Staggs caused a disruption — including spitting, cursing and kicking over a table — that prompted Judge Jack Murphy to call for his removal.

After Staggs was taken away, Murphy sentenced Staggs to more than 51 years in prison for aggravated kidnapping. Stagg also received nearly five years for robbing Greemore and an addtional three years for assaulting a jail officer.
