Omaha, Neb. ? The perception that Nebraska struggles more than other teams against mobile quarterbacks isn’t necessarily true, Cornhuskers coach Frank Solich says.

The Huskers will be facing one of the Big 12’s top running quarterbacks in Vince Young today when they visit Texas. Young is the Longhorns’ leading rusher, and the red-shirt freshman has run for at least one touchdown in each of his seven games.

“It challenges everybody when you have a quarterback who is mobile,” Solich said. “Everybody is searching for that type of quarterback — a guy who can be an excellent thrower and can also break the long run against you whether it’s from a passing play, quarterback draw, running out a one-back set or out of two-back set with the option game. There is so much you can do with a mobile quarterback.”

Missouri quarterback Brad Smith tormented the Huskers in the Tigers’ 41-24 win on Oct. 11. Smith ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 180 yards and a TD.

“Against Missouri, in our one loss, we really struggled in the fourth quarter,” Solich said. “There was a combination of reasons for that. They have an excellent running quarterback. But we’ve also seen some running quarterbacks we’ve done a pretty good job with.”

Texas A&M’s Reggie McNeal, for example, was held to 69 yards and failed to generate any touchdown drives in the Huskers’ 48-12 win Oct. 18.

Young ran for 101 yards and two TDs and passed for 65 yards in Texas’ 56-0 win last week at Baylor. Young, who has 550 yards rushing and 567 yards passing, is the first Texas player since Alan Lowry in 1972 and the third in UT history to rush and pass for more than 500 yards one season.

The Longhorns, who hold a 5-4 edge in the series with Nebraska, won 27-24 in Lincoln last year.

“It will be a challenge to go down there and get it done, but our players have a great mind set,” Solich said. “We’re anxious to play the game. They’ve been great matchups between Nebraska and Texas over the years.”
