State official confirms new U.S. 59 route

U.S. Highway 59 will be relocated to a new $214 million freeway to be built 300 feet east of the existing highway between Lawrence and Ottawa, the state’s top transportation official announced Friday.

Deb Miller, Kansas secretary of transportation, confirmed the route recommended earlier this year by the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.

Construction of the four-lane freeway is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2007 and be open to traffic by the end of 2009, Miller said, during a meeting in Lawrence.
