Sox put Martinez on DL

Boston — Pedro Martinez was placed on the disabled list for the fourth time in five seasons Sunday, but he’s expected to pitch next weekend in Toronto. Martinez, who has an inflamed tendon and strained muscle high on his right side, went on the 15-day list retroactive to May 16, the day after his last appearance for the Red Sox. He can be activated Saturday. He will miss Boston’s three-game series at Yankee Stadium, which starts today. The Red Sox were expected to activate lefty Matt White to take Martinez’s roster spot

Rookie breaks wrist

Phoenix — San Diego outfielder Jason Bay broke his right wrist when Arizona right-hander Elmer Dessens hit him with a pitch in the second inning of Sunday’s game. Bay, 24, was playing in his third major league game.

Vina leaves game

Pittsburgh — St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Fernando Vina left Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh after straining his right hamstring. Vina had five hits in St. Louis’ weekend series in Pittsburgh.

Bonds forced to sit

Denver — Barry Bonds tested his sore right knee by riding a stationary bike Sunday, but the Giants still plan to keep him out of the lineup until they return to San Francisco. Manager Felipe Alou said he would not consider using Bonds as a pinch-hitter for the rest of San Francisco’s series against Colorado because he’s not well enough to run the bases. The Giants open a two-game series Tuesday night against Arizona at Pacific Bell Park. After test results showed tendinitis, the five-time MVP missed Saturday’s and Sunday’s games.
