‘Legends’ stamp to honor Hepburn

Beauty and elegance, plus a dedication to humanitarian causes, best describe the magnificence of Audrey Hepburn. She was a legend in her time on the screen and stage, never to be forgotten by her fans.

In tribute to Hepburn’s entertainment achievements as well as her humanitarian accomplishments, the U.S. Postal Service will release a new 37-cent stamp on June 12 honoring Hepburn in the 2003 “Legends of Hollywood” series. The stamps will feature a painting by Michael J. Deas based on a photo from the 1954 film “Sabrina.”

Hepburn appeared in nearly 30 films and many stage plays. In 1953, she starred in the role of a princess in “Roman Holiday,” for which she won an Academy Award for best actress. In 1954, she received a Tony award for her performance in the Broadway play “Ondine.”

In 1988, she became a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, focusing her efforts on the plight of children around the world. She met with members of Congress and discussed her observations and experiences with the media.

She died at her home in Switzerland on January 29, 1993, at the age of 63.

First-day-of-issue postmarks will be available by calling (800) Stamps-24.
