NBA looms for Jayhawks

Hinrich, Collison likely first-round picks

Several NBA “mock drafts” were released Friday by various Web sites, a day after the professional hoops league held its draft lottery.

Experts from ESPN.com, sportsillustrated.cnn.com, insidehoops.com, nbadraft.net, cbssportsline.com and foxsports.com all agree on one thing — Kansas University’s Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison remain certain first-round picks heading into the June 26 draft.

Here’s how the experts say both Jayhawks stack up in the draft, which once again figures to be dominated by foreign players and college early entries:

  • Hinrich, 6-foot-3, Sioux City, Iowa — ESPN.com (No. 8, Milwaukee Bucks); nbadraft.net (No. 9, New York Knicks); cbssportsline.com and foxsports.com (No. 10, Washington Wizards); sportsillustrated.cnn.com (No. 15, Orlando Magic); insidehoops.com (No. 19, Utah Jazz).
  • Collison, 6-9, Iowa Falls, Iowa — foxsports.com (No. 13, Memphis Grizzlies); insidehoops.com (No. 14, Milwaukee Bucks); cbssportsline.com (No. 16, Boston Celtics); nbadraft.net (No. 17, Phoenix Suns); sportsillustrated.cnn.com (No. 23, Portland Trailblazers); ESPN.com (No. 24, Los Angeles Lakers).

In an interesting twist, hoopshype.com has Hinrich and Collison being teammates next year. The Website has Hinrich being picked No. 12 by Seattle; Collison No. 14 by Seattle.

“He’s my favorite player in the draft,” one NBA scout said of Hinrich in an interview with SI.com.

Of Collison, cbssports-

line.com said: “He could be a strong system player for (Boston coach) Jim O’Brien, given his great footwork and ability to knock down the open jumper.”

None of the experts has Charlie Villanueva, 6-10 from Blair Academy in New Jersey, listed as a first-round pick.

Villanueva, who will attend either KU or UConn if he’s not assured first-round status in the draft, is regarded as an early to middle second-round pick.

Villanueva made an unofficial campus visit to UConn Thursday and was hoping to choose a college by the end of the weekend.

“He liked Connecticut a lot. It’s too close to call,” Long Island Panther AAU coach Gary Charles said of Villanueva’s college options. “He was hoping to announce before going to Florida Sunday, but I told him if he’s not comfortable with that, don’t make that decision.”

Asked whether Villanueva ultimately would opt for the NBA or college, Charles said: “That’s another one too close to call. That’s the idea of Charlie going to Florida, to start working out and getting some teams in to see him.”

“If they are talking first round, I’m going to stay in it,” Villanueva told The Day newspaper of New London, Conn. “If they’re talking second round, I’ll look into my second option — college.”

He enjoyed his trip to UConn. “It’s in the Big East. Playing at Madison Square Garden … that’s everybody’s dream. That’s what I’m considering,” he said.
