Harvick snares pole, record
Concord, N.C. ? Kevin Harvick set a Busch Series track record Friday, turning a lap at 184.543 mph to win the pole for the Carquest 300.
Harvick’s lap around Lowe’s Motor Speedway easily beat Ron Hornaday’s year-old record of 182.094 mph.
“That was quite a lap there in the Busch car,” Harvick said. “It would be nice if my Winston Cup car ran that fast.”
Harvick ran a 181.953 in his Winston Cup car earlier Friday to qualify 20th for the Coca-Cola 600.
“The sun popped out there in Winston Cup qualifying, but the clouds came back over during Busch qualifying and made for some faster speeds,” Harvick said.
It was the second Busch pole of the year for Harvick, the 2001 series champion.
Tony Raines will start second, the best start of his career. Scott Riggs, who learned that his sponsor will not be back next season, qualified third.
Winston Cup regular Michael Waltrip was fourth-fastest, and Kyle Busch, the 18-year-old younger brother of NASCAR sensation Kurt Busch, qualified fifth in his series debut.
Kyle Busch is driving a car owned by Joe Nemechek, his teammate at Hendrick Motorsports. Earlier Friday he finished 11th in the ARCA race, and Harvick, who has had his share of run-ins with Kurt Busch, kept a close eye on him.
“He looks crazier than his brother. I watched him in the ARCA race and there was a few times he made me cringe up,” Harvick said. “But I think he’ll settle into the Busch race. In the ARCA race, I think he felt like he was King Kong, and he should have.”
