Cincinnati church to get its bells

? The Christ Church has been a fixture in the city’s downtown since 1835 and became the cathedral for the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio in 1993.

But the landmark never had bells — until now.

Parishioners donated nearly $400,000 to install 14 bronze bells. The bells collectively weigh 11,000 pounds, ranging individually from 116 pounds to 1,990 pounds.

It isn’t known why past congregations never obtained bells for the church, whose bell tower was built in 1907.

They will hang more than six stories above street level and will sound through the use of an electronically activated striker.

Other than testing, the bells are to remain silent until Episcopal Bishop Herbert Thompson Jr. blesses them June 8 on Pentecost Sunday. Thompson leads the Southern Ohio diocese.
