Eudora ready for regional

Eudora High’s baseball team had its best season ever this year, but it might be what the Cardinals didn’t do that dominates their thoughts heading into today’s Class 4A regional at Tonganoxie.

The Cardinals’ 14-4 record is by far the school’s best — no other Eudora squad had topped .500. However, last week the Cardinals dropped a pair of games to Gardner-Edgerton and lost an opportunity at the Frontier League title.

“They were pretty disappointed,” said Eudora coach Dirk Kinney, of his team’s 4-0 and 6-4 setbacks. “But we just didn’t hit the ball.”

And bashing the baseball has been the biggest reason the Cardinals — who play Kansas City Piper at 5 p.m. today — had their school’s best record.

“We were phenomenal at hitting in crucial situations,” said Kinney, of his team’s .375 average. “But they’re ready to get back out there today.”

The Cardinals Nos. 2, 3 and 4 hitters — Andrew Pyle, Aaron Westerhouse and Troy Van Horn — provided the pop in Eudora’s offensive arsenal, which produced 46 doubles.

But it hasn’t been all offense.

Senior pitcher Seth Johnson, a William Jewell signee, and sophomore Rod Evinger each tallied 4-1 records.

Add a solid defense, and Eudora had its mind set on a Frontier League crown and getting to state, Kinney said.

That goal hasn’t changed.

“You could tell they wanted to get right back out there,” said Kinney.
