Proud veteran

To the editor:

Recently, I was given a list of questions about World War II, by Katie Towner, the daughter of my friend, Randy Towner. They were given this assignment to interview someone who had lived during World War II.

I was asked if I remembered what I was doing on Dec. 7, 1941. I remember it very clearly, for an 80-year-old. My dad was listening to our Philco radio (no TV in those days). He hollered out, “Those damn Japs just bombed Pearl Harbor.” Another question was what I thought of using the atomic bomb. I said I thought it was the right decision by Harry Truman to use it, even though it took a lot of innocent lives. By using the atomic bomb, the war was ended, and a lot of our young servicemen’s lives were saved.

Another question asked was what I would like her generation to remember about World War II. I told her that I would like them to remember all the young men who gave their lives during World War II and all the other wars, so that they and we are able to enjoy the freedom we have in this great country today.

To that, with Flag Day coming next month, I would like to tell all the flag burners and protesters that they should hang their heads in shame because these young men died for their freedom to burn and protest. In most other countries they would be shot for their actions. I am a proud veteran of World War II, and I thank God that I live in this great country. God Bless the USA!
