Lajoie wins Busch pole
Chevys sweep top four spots
Nazareth, Pa. ? Randy LaJoie set a track record while winning the pole Saturday for the NASCAR Busch series race at Nazareth Speedway.
The two-time series champion’s fast lap of 133.215 mph in qualifying for today’s Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200 broke the record of 132.402 for the one-mile oval. It was set by Jeff Green in July 2000.
Stacy Compton took the outside of the front row with a run at 132.139.
Ron Hornaday and Mike Bliss made it a top-four sweep for Chevrolets.
It was the second pole this season and ninth overall for LaJoie. But he knows starting in front often means little.
He finished 19th after winning the pole last month in Nashville, Tenn., and is without a victory in 48 starts since taking the Sam’s Town 250 in Nashville Oct. 13, 2001.
“Getting the pole and setting a new track record is good, but I want to get back to victory lane,” LaJoie said. “It’s been a long drought.”
Scott Riggs qualified fifth and Jason Keller sixth in Fords. Johnny Sauter, Ashton Lewis Jr., David Stremme and Kasey Kahne completed the top 10 in the 43-car field. Series leader David Green will start 12th.
Polesitters have not done well in 15 previous Busch races at Nazareth. Only Elliott Sadler, in 1997, won from the top spot.
