KU’s Chesang wins 10,000 at Outdoor

? Kansas University freshman Benson Chesang won the men’s 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:05.09 during Saturday’s first day of the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Junior Paige Higgins also scored for the Jayhawks, finishing fourth in the women’s 10,000 in 36:36.98.

Also during Day One, KU junior Jamie Waters took 12th in the women’s hammer throw (161 feet, 2 inches), and freshman Adam Fitts placed 15th in the men’s hammer throw (156-3.00).

Fiona Asigbee of Missouri led in the heptathlon after three events Saturday.

Asigbee won the heptathlon high jump with a jump of 5-91¼4. Her 2,553 points topped the women’s heptathlon standings at Myers Stadium at the University of Texas.

Debbie Thornhill of Baylor successfully defended her title in the women’s 10,000 meters in 35:43.14.

Missouri led the women’s division with 17 points. Nebraska was second with 16, and Kansas State was third with 12.

Missouri led the men’s division with 23 points. Kansas State was second with 12 points, and Texas was third with 11.

The meet will continue through Monday.
