LHS-Free State baseball game canceled

Because of the rain and wet fields, the baseball game planned for 5 p.m. today between Free State and Lawrence high schools has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.

The game had been scheduled to make up for the May 8 game, which ended in the fifth inning tied at 3 p.m. because of lightning.

A tornado hit southwest Lawrence shortly after the game was postponed.

The game was to have resumed exactly where it left off — with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning with one strike on LHS senior Matt Johnson. The Lions had senior Spence Chaney at second and senior Kyle McManness at first.

But, according to school district sports officials, the game will not be counted in the record books.

Free State will be awarded the No. 2 regional seed and they will host regional play. LHS is third in the regional.

LHS would have had to beat Free State and then won a coin-flip to gain the No. 2 seed. Free State ends the regular season at 16-3, LHS at 15-4.
