Athletes of the week

Ashley Jackson

Free State

Class: Sophomore.

Sport: Girls swimming.

The week: When Jackson’s on, few prep swimmers are better. She won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events at Saturday’s Sunflower League meet for the second straight year, breaking school records in both. Even better, her 200 time was the best in her career — high school or club — and the 500 mark was her fastest of the prep season. Jackson, who was third at state in the 500 last year, certainly has her sights set on winning a state title this year.

Comment: “She was just phenomenal,” FSHS coach Jama Crady said. “She just puts her game face on when at league or state. She decides in her head that she wants to win and then does it. She’s definitely a championship-meet kind of girl. It brings out the best in her every time.”

Rob Musgrave

Santa Fe Trail

Class: Junior.

Sport: Baseball.

The week: Musgrave was marvelous Monday against Lansing, tossing a no-hitter in the Chargers’ 3-1 win. Musgrave, 5-1 this season with a 1.48 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched, had everything working against the Lions, Class 4A’s No. 9-ranked team by the Kansas Baseball Coaches Assn. He’s not the only stud on the staff, which includes seniors Troy Baird and Travis Kohn and junior Jay Shively. SFT, 15-3 overall and 4A’s seventh-ranked team, returns to the diamond today at home against De Soto.

Comment: “He just threw really well,” SFT coach Dave Watkins said. “Rob’s one of those guys that gets stronger as the game wears on.”
