Mill Valley girls dominate meet

? It wasn’t hard to pick Mill Valley High’s Lindsey Boan out of a pack of sprinters Wednesday at the Kaw Valley League track meet.

Boan sported a pair of half-red, half-neon-green shoes that perfectly contrasted her navy blue uniform.

She stood out because of her running, too.

Boan was the awesome performer on an awesome Mill Valley girls track and field team that dominated the KVL meet at Basehor-Linwood High. Boan captured the 100- and 200-meter dash titles and also was on the winning 4×100-meter relay team.

Mill Valley garnered 159 team points, 57 more than second-place Tonganoxie.

“It’s a real nice way to go out,” said Boan, a senior. “I really appreciate all my teammates.”

Boan, who was the first leg of the Jaguars’ 4×400 relay team that finished second, had a hand in 38 points Wednesday.

“Anytime you get a senior to step up and do what she’s done this year, it makes our jobs a lot easier,” Mill Valley coach Mark Peck said. “She was awesome tonight.”

Mill Valley’s Tara Stuart was also a standout, capturing the long-jump and triple-jump league titles and finishing second with Boan, Emily Gilbreath and Sara Karcher in the 4×400.

“Once again, Tara carried us,” Peck said. “She got us a lot of points. That’s why they call it a team effort.”

Perhaps a microcosm of the night on the girls’ side of the meet was the 200. Boan won the event in 30.43 seconds, but right behind her were two more Jaguars — Heather Sprague (31.08) and Andrea Crabaugh (31.11).

“You don’t count on it,” Peck said of the sensational showing. “We knew our girls had to run hard. And they did.”

On the boys side, Lansing was the winner with 116 points, beating Tonganoxie by 20. Perry-Lecompton took third with 83 points.

For the Chieftains, first-place finishes by Kyle Norris in the 1,600, Andrew Miller in the javelin and Jacob Walker in the triple jump wasn’t enough to catch Lansing, which had seven first-place finishes of its own, including all three relays.

“We thought we had a shot, but Lansing was too tough tonight,” Tonganoxie coach Phil Williams said. “We performed well, but we had some events that we did less than we thought we would.”
