Seabury settles for tie

Seahawks scoreless

Given the circumstances, Seabury Academy’s girls soccer players could have been happy with a scoreless tie Tuesday against Kansas City Hyman Brand.

But they were not.

Hyman Brand showed up at Youth Sports Inc. fields a half-hour late because of bus problems, and the Seahawks (1-6-1) were within seconds of picking up the easiest victory possible — a forfeit.

Instead, the teams played — to a 0-0 tie.

“I think the team is aggravated because it’s usually a win or tie for us,” Seabury senior Janie Schneider said. “They’re a team we can play with.”

She said Hyman Brand had the same problem last year.

As the time allowance ran out Tuesday, the Rams ran out of their bus and onto the field. The Seahawks already had gone from a warmup routine to practice.

“We had a whole practice before the game,” Seabury coach Coy Weege said. “We didn’t know when they we’re coming. You cool down and then try to warm up without wearing yourself out.”

The game went on as scheduled, but was cut by 20 minutes — two 30-minute halves with a five-minute break for halftime.

Both teams had their chances — some of them wide-open — but couldn’t score.

“The girls worked hard, but they didn’t finish,” Hyman Brand coach Derek Gale said. “You can’t win if you can’t score.”

Freshman keeper Lindsey Ahlen kept the ball out of the Seahawks’ net, but Seabury freshman Regan Sisson might have played the biggest role in shutting down the Rams (8-3-1) by taking the ball away from would-be scorers in the middle of the field.

“She was phenomenal,” Weege said.

Seabury will close out the regular season Thursday at Kansas City Harmon.
