Ruth B. Howard

Services for Ruth B. Howard, 95, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. today at Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service in St. Joseph, Mo. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph.

Mrs. Howard died Saturday, May 10, 2003, in Lawrence.

She was born July 10, 1907, in Smithville, Mo., the daughter of Pearl A. and Mary (Turner) Breit. She graduated from University of Missouri Columbia with a degree in education.

Mrs. Howard was an English teacher at Central High School in St. Joseph. She was a 60-year member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and helped in the library. She was also past president and 60-year member of PEO Chapter F.L., honorary life member and past president of Runcie Club, American Association of University Women 50-year and lifetime member, and board member of YWCA, which recognized her as an outstanding women’s leader in 1994.

She married Melvin A. Howard on June 28, 1936. He died Jan. 29, 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann King, Lawrence; two grandchildren and four great-grandsons.

Friends may call after 10:30 a.m. today at the funeral home, where family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. today.

The family suggests memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice.
