Iowa State promotes assistant

Morgan says he's replacing Eustachy as Cyclones' coach

? Iowa State assistant Wayne Morgan said Tuesday night he would replace Larry Eustachy as the coach of the Cyclones.

Morgan, 52, told WHO-TV in Des Moines that he agreed to a deal Tuesday evening and an official announcement would be made this afternoon.

Messages left for Iowa State director of media relations Tom Kroeschell on his cell phone and at home late Tuesday were not immediately returned. A phone call placed to Morgan went unanswered.

Morgan, who joined Eustachy’s staff in July 2002, told WHO his first goal as head coach would be to heal the wounds of the divided Cyclone nation.

Eustachy resigned last week, seven days after photos of him drinking and kissing young women at a fraternity party were published.

Before going to Iowa State, Morgan was the head coach at Long Beach State for six seasons, finishing with a 91-84 record. His 1999-2000 team finished 24-6 and won the Big West Conference championship.

He was an assistant at Syracuse, Xavier and Dartmouth.

Earlier Tuesday, Chattanooga coach Jeff Lebo said he took himself out of the running to replace Eustachy.

Iowa State athletic director Bruce Van De Velde declined to say Tuesday whether Lebo was even offered the job. He said the search would continue and that the pool of 30 candidates he began with last week had been narrowed to fewer than six.

Morgan and Wyoming coach Steve McClain also interviewed last weekend for the job. McClain removed his name from consideration Sunday.

With a $1.1 million salary, Eustachy had been Iowa’s highest-paid state employee.
