Jackson gigantic at league

FSHS soph wins twice; LHS fourth as team

? Free State High sophomore Ashley Jackson had a huge day at the Sunflower League swimming and diving meet — again.

Jackson swept the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events for the second straight year, knocking three seconds off her preliminary time in the 200 and breaking the school record held by freshman Ashley Robinson.

“It felt great,” Jackson said. “It felt awesome and really smooth. I guess it’s the atmosphere here.”

Robinson was the Firebirds’ other individual winner, taking the 200 individual medley. Yet, thanks to a second-place finish by Lawrence High’s 400 freestyle relay team of senior Sarah Marlow, junior Melissa Farve and sophomores Melissa Little and Julia Szabo, the Lions edged FSHS for fourth place in the team standings, 113-110, Saturday at Olathe Chisholm Trail.

That was one of few satisfying finishes for LHS.

The Lions, who were behind team champ Shawnee Mission East, Olathe East and Shawnee Mission Northwest, entered the meet hoping for third place. But with two disqualifications Saturday and some surprising performances from Northwest’s swimmers, LHS had to settle for fourth.

“This wasn’t our best meet,” LHS coach Ryan Adams said. “I think the curse of the 13th swimmers got to us. Individually, we swam well, but we needed some breaks.”

Five Lions were that ’13th swimmer,’ including freshman diver Meredith West, who notched that spot Saturday. LHS had four finish 13th Friday, which meant four that missed the finals.

Still, Adams was pleased with state-qualifying swims from Farve in the 100 backstroke, who swam 1:05.63, and Szabo in the 200 IM, who swam 2:23.47. Both dropped two seconds of their previous best. Also impressive was Marlow, who finished second in the 100 breaststroke. She would have done the same in the 200 IM, but was disqualified for having a hair scrunchie on her wrist, which isn’t allowed by high school rules.

Adams also praised Little, who was third in the 500 free and sixth in the 200 free.

“She came to swim today,” he said.

FSHS didn’t pick up any additional state qualifiers, but came close — again — with senior Lindsey Witthaus in the 500 free and freshman Kelsi Mishler in the 100 backstroke. They’ll have one last chance at the junior varsity meet Wednesday at Shawnee Mission East.

“It’s just hard to swim fast in this meet,” FSHS coach Jama Crady said. “They’re a little down at this point and kind of tired. But they can do it Wednesday.”

As for Jackson and Robinson, who beat the 200 IM field by six seconds and also placed third in the 100 butterfly, they remain the Firebirds’ two studs.

Jackson, third at state last year in the 500, just blew Crady away.

“She had the best 200 time of her life, regardless of season, whether it’s high school or club,” Crady said. “She had the best 500 time in her high school career.

“She was just unbelievable.”
