Area artists paint mural on Emporia building

Emporia — Area artists Louis Copt and Stan Herd are making their mark on a building in downtown Emporia, where Copt grew up and attended school.

The two are collaborating on a mural that will depict a late-spring, early-summer landscape of the Flint Hills on a wall that measures 72 feet wide by 40 feet tall. In the foreground, wildflowers are blooming. In the distance, a spring shower is rising over the hills.

For their work, the artists will receive $30,000, which is being funded by community donations.

Copt and Herd plan to be finished with the mural by early summer.

Kansas Arts Commission extends award deadline

Topeka — The nomination deadline for the 2003 Kansas Governor’s Arts Awards is being extended by the Kansas Arts Commission until May 28.

Nominations must be submitted on an official form in one of six categories: individual artist, arts organization, art educator, arts advocate, individual patron or patron organization. Individual artists may be in the visual, performing, literary, folk or media arts.

Nominees must be Kansas citizens or Kansas-based organizations with records of outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth and support or availability of the arts in Kansas. Not eligible are prior honorees, current members of the commission or its staff, and art projects or programs.

Nominations must be received in the Kansas Arts Commission office by 5 p.m. or bear a postmark no later than the deadline date.

Camerata Lawrence to play museum concert

Camerata Lawrence will play an afternoon of chamber music at 2:30 p.m. today at Kansas University’s Spencer Museum of Art.

Admission is free.

The program includes Violin Duos by Bela Bartok, Violin Sonata by Claude Debussy, Sequenza I for flute by Luciano Berio, Sonatine for flute and piano by Darius Milhaud and Bachianas Brasilieras No. 6 by Heitor Villa Lobos.

Performers in the group are Allan Comstock, bassoon; Angela Rowland, flute; Merav Singer, violin; Eric Williams, violin; Sochun Wong, piano; and Inara Zandmane, piano.
