Athletes of the week

Scott Elwell

Lawrence High

Class: Senior

Sport: Boys tennis

The week: Elwell won the Topeka West Invitational Wednesday at Kossover Tennis Center, but it wasn’t with his usual style of dominating serves and powerful groundstrokes. When he beat Topeka Washburn Rural’s Ben Wiechman in the semifinals and Salina Central’s Nathan Martin in the finals, he did it by moving his opponents around, then outthinking and basically befuddling them.

Comment: “Scott got a little out of his comfort zone, but played well,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said. “When the other player tried to force the issue, Scott made adjustments. Instead of the same old same old, he got smart. Sometimes, that’s tough to do.”

Courtney Edmonds

McLouth

Class: Senior

Sport: Girls track

The week: Edmonds, who will run track and cross country next season for Kansas University, opened some eyes at the Seaman Invitational last Friday in Topeka. The defending Class 2A 800-meter champ logged the third-fastest 800 time in the state, clocking in at 2:20.7 and beating runners from 4A, 5A and 6A schools. Edmonds, who also ran at the Kansas Relays three weeks ago, has been capable of that kind of performance all season — and it might signal more on the way.

Comment: “It’s kind of been overdue,” Bulldogs coach George Karn said. “She’s been running the 400, 4×800 and 4×400. We just wanted her to concentrate on the 800 last week to build some confidence.”
