Weather challenges airport’s grand opening

? The airport in this south-central Kansas town has officially reopened after a bumpy journey.

The airport once had a runway so deteriorated the Federal Aviation Administration designated it “failed.” But for nearly a decade, reconstruction of the airport was scarcely more than a master plan drawn up with no money to carry it out.

And then, money from both the state and federal governments came through to build new runways. A home bought to clear room for a runway was moved and turned into the airport’s new terminal building. A pay-at-the-pump refueling station was put up. And 11 hangars were built for future rental.

The renovations, at a cost of $4.4 million, were finished earlier this year, and Sunday was the airport’s grand reopening, although much of the pomp planned to go along with the ceremony was called off or stalled because of the violent storms that moved through the region.

At least 25 people in Kansas and Missouri have died from Sunday’s storms.
