FSHS grad Chadwick sets Div. III track mark

Saturday was a long but satisfying day for Williams College sophomore Joyia Chadwick.

Chadwick, a 2001 graduate of Free State High, won the heptathlon at the NCAA Div. III New England championships at the Williams College track in Williamstown, Mass.

Chadwick posted a school-, meet- and track-record 4,551 points. Her score was good enough to qualify her for the NCAA Div. III Championships later this month.

Chadwick set personal bests in five of the seven events.

“Had she been entered, Joyia would have won the open high jump and long jump,” Williams coach Ralph White said. “That’s impressive for a multi-event athlete.”

Chadwick leaped 17 feet, 8 inches in the long jump and 5-4 in the high jump.

After completing the two days of competition, Chadwick performed in a concert with the Williams Wind Ensemble. She is the school’s first-chair flute.

Chadwick was also named a third-team NCAA Div. III All-American in volleyball last fall.
