Jayhawk track pulls double duty

The Kansas University track and field squad had athletes competing in two locales Saturday, as three runners traveled to the Cardinal Invitational in Stanford, Calif., while the rest of the squad participated at the Ward Haylett Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.

At Stanford, senior Mark Menefee qualified for NCAA Regionals after placing 14th in the 5,000 meters, and junior Laura Lavoie registered the second-best 1,500-meter time in KU history when she placed seventh at 4:18.61.

Sophomore Megan Manthe was 18th in the same event at 4:26.72.

At Lincoln, the Jayhawk women’s 4×400 relay squad of juniors Duchess Williams and Stacy Keller, freshman Angela Pichardo and sophomore Kim Clark set a school record of 3:39.09, which earned the foursome first place.

Junior Leo Bookman won his second consecutive 200-meter dash in as many weeks in 20.57 — fourth-best in Kansas outdoor history.

The Jayhawk track squads will compete Saturday at the ESU Twilight Qualifier in Emporia.
