Wichita plant won’t compete for Boeing assembly contract

? Boeing Co.’s plant in Wichita, Kan., is not in the running for final assembly of the planned 7E7 jetliner, a company spokesman said, even though the Kansas Legislature is considering a $500 million aid package for the company.

“Wichita clearly sees its role as a supplier to the final assembly,” Boeing spokesman Chuck Cadena said Thursday. “We’ve always seen that money as helping Wichita compete with outside suppliers for part of the 7E7 component business.”

The Kansas Senate voted 34-6 Thursday to approve $500 million in state-backed bonds to help Boeing create aerospace jobs at Wichita. The bill now goes to the Kansas House, where it is expected to pass.

Boeing lobbyists have told Kansas legislators the money would pay for research, development and tooling for components for the new twin-jet.

But some in the Puget Sound region, where Boeing now has nearly all its commercial airplane assembly plants, have worried the money could put Wichita in the running for the final assembly site and the thousands of high-paid assembly and engineering jobs that would go with it.
