Stolen Jeep recovered after Ottawa chase

Ottawa — An unidentified suspect Friday morning drove a stolen Jeep Cherokee through yards, fences, driveways and the rail trail in Ottawa before striking a post and being arrested near the city’s water treatment plant.

According to the Ottawa Police Department, the vehicle was stolen between 11 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 a.m. Friday from the 1200 block of South Elm Street.

A relative of the vehicle’s owner saw it being driven near Ottawa High School, and police stopped the driver about 8:10 a.m. at 13th and Eisenhower streets.

But as an officer approached the vehicle, the driver sped away, taking police on a short chase. At one point during the chase, the suspect deliberately sideswiped a police car, according to a press release from the department.
