Hamilton, Ga. ? A man was arrested Thursday after allegedly killing his father and kidnapping two nuns, mutilating one of them in an attack that has left this Georgia town in shock.

Adrian Robinson, a 25-year-old with prior charges of assault and theft, was arrested at a Burger King in Norfolk, Va., early Thursday, less than a day after police in a neighboring city found the body of Sister Philomena Fogarty, her head, hands and feet cut off.

“You can’t make sense of it,” said the Rev. Ronnie Madden of Christ the King Catholic Church, where the 64-year-old Fogarty was known for her work with jail inmates, the poor and the elderly.

“Sister Philomena was a saint,” Madden said. “She is probably one of the greatest women I have ever met in my life.”

Police had searched for Robinson since Sunday, when they say he shot his 56-year-old father, Henry, at the home they shared in the western Georgia town of Hamilton. Family members told authorities that Robinson had accused his father of sexually assaulting him before shooting him 16 times.

After the killing, authorities said Robinson apparently hiked three miles to the church and broke into the mobile home where Fogarty lived with 72-year-old nun Luci Kristofik.

Kristofik told investigators that Robinson took $900, bound and gagged them, put them in their car and drove to Norfolk, some 570 miles away. Kristofik was found uninjured Tuesday at a Norfolk hotel.

A manhunt began Wednesday after Robinson ran away from police who spotted him driving the nuns’ car in Norfolk, and Fogarty’s body was found in a parking lot in nearby Virginia Beach.

Robinson was arrested at 2 a.m. Thursday at a Norfolk Burger King, where cleaning worker James Bradley recognized his face from news reports and hit a silent alarm, serving him cookies and pie while waiting for police to arrive.

“He was telling me what happened to him, that his daddy tried to rape him,” Bradley said. He said Robinson never mentioned the nuns or the slayings, and did not divulge where he had been hiding.

Bradley said he did not know how Robinson got into the locked restaurant.

Later, as Robinson washed his hands in the kitchen sink, Bradley quietly unlocked the front door to let police inside. Bradley said he held onto Robinson to keep him from bolting.

“None of us expected it to end this way,” said Norfolk police spokesman Chris Amos. “With the acts he committed, we just knew if there was a quote ‘loaded gun,’ it was him.”

Robinson has been charged with kidnapping and two counts of murder. An initial court appearance in Norfolk was set for today. It was unclear if he had a lawyer yet.

Police say Robinson, who briefly attended Norfolk State and Old Dominion universities in the mid-’90s, had a criminal record that included a theft charge in Georgia for which he was sentenced to probation. His estranged wife and child live in Stamford, Conn., where Robinson was given probation for assault and burglary.

“He hadn’t been in any trouble up until he got involved in drugs,” Patricia Point-Dujour, his estranged wife, said Thursday. “The person that he has become I do not know.”

Neither Robinson nor his father attended Christ the King, but authorities said Robinson was probably familiar with Fogarty because of her charitable work.
