Old home town – 25, 40 and 100 years ago today

IN 1978

Charging that too many of their suggestions had been ignored, members of a citizens review committee for allocation of community development funds said they planned to appeal to the Lawrence City Commission on the final disposition of $760,000 in federal funds due to be provided for the city.

City commissioners were reviewing extensive plans for a senior citizen center in the municipal building at Eighth and Vermont streets.

IN 1963

Col. A.P. Rollins of the Army Corps of Engineers told Lawrence Rotarians that things were looking particularly good for such local projects as the Perry Reservoir, Clinton and Pomona lakes and the Lawrence flood control program. He said substantial and significant amounts of money were due to be appropriated in Congress for the ventures.

IN 1903

From the Lawrence Daily World of March 25, 1903: “Among the candidates mentioned for department commander of the Grand Army of the Republic is S.J. Churchill of this city.” . . . L.H. Menger won the nomination for police judge in the Republican primaries in one of the hardest contests seen in this city for a long time. He defeated R.C. Manley by 71 votes. The members of the board of education elected were Wilder S. Metcalf and W.H. Carroth with George R. Gould so close behind that the result was not known until the last vote was counted.
