KU bowling clubs advance

? Kansas University’s men rolled, and the KU women squeaked, into college bowling’s Sweet 16.

The KU men’s bowling club placed second behind top-ranked Wichita State, 12,858 pins to 12,764, in the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships Midwestern Sectional Sunday at Brunswick Four Seasons Lanes.

The KU women, meanwhile, placed third — just six pins ahead of fifth-place McKendree College — to be one of the top four teams advancing to the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships. WSU won the women’s team title with 11,883 pins. Nebraska was second with 11,656, followed by KU .

“It was very exciting,” KU coach Michael Fine said. “We knew exactly what was going on. It came down to the 10th frame for all three teams. It’s a great story for the women’s team. They worked very hard, and we’re very excited for them.”

KU’s men’s club has qualified for the IBC the last three years and four of the last five. It’s the first berth for the KU women since 1995, and it’s the first time both Kansas clubs have advanced.

The 16-team IBC will run April 24-28 in Tulsa, Okla.
