Tigers pound Jayhawks

? Missouri handed 19th-ranked Kansas University a loss for the second straight day, pounding the Jayhawks, 14-8, Saturday at Taylor Stadium.

Kansas (20-8 overall, 0-2 Big 12 Conference) made it 1-0 in the first inning off an RBI single by junior first baseman Ryan Baty that drove in senior center fielder Lance Hayes.

But KU starter Josh Duran (2-2) allowed seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning.

The Jayhawks rallied, scoring five runs in the third, highlighted by senior designated hitter Kevin Wheeler’s team-leading sixth home run of the season.

Missouri (15-8, 2-3) answered again, tallying five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 12-6 lead.

Junior right fielder Matt Tribble helped Kansas pull within 12-8 in the fifth, hitting a two-run shot over the center-field wall. But Mizzou put the game out of reach with two runs on three hits in the eighth for the final score.

The three-game series will conclude today with junior left-hander Ryan Knippschild (5-1) taking the mound for the Jayhawks. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
