Williams not superstitious about Oklahoma City venue

? Kansas University coach Roy Williams is known for his superstitions, but he isn’t worried about playing in Oklahoma City. In 1998, KU suffered a second-round loss to Rhode Island at the Myriad.

“It ranks up there,” Williams said of his most disappointing losses. “I am not nervous about playing here again. An even more disappointing loss might have been 1992, but we’ve been back to Dayton at least once — maybe twice — since then and we’ve done all right.

“I’m superstitious at times, but that’s not one of them.”

During last year’s march to the Final Four, Williams had his team rub a statue for good luck in St. Louis. The Jayhawks also have made a habit of spitting in rivers.

The coach said he didn’t have any such plans for the Jayhawks before tonight’s game at Ford Center, which replaced the Myriad.

Rival Oklahoma also will play its first-round game today at Ford Center. The Sooners, however, are in the East bracket; KU is in the West.

Williams is glad his team won’t have to face OU’s Hollis Price.

“I’ve got a great deal of respect for him,” Williams said of the standout 6-foot-1 guard. “He’s a tough little sucker.”

Kansas' Aaron Miles answers questions from the media. After practice Wednesday in Oklahoma City, the Jayhawks met the press.
