Iowa State survives WSU

? A big crowd and a sharp-shooting Tim Barnes carried Iowa State into a rematch with Iowa.

Jake Sullivan scored 23 points and Barnes hit four three-pointers, leading a 16-3 second-half run that sent Iowa State to a 76-65 victory Wednesday over Wichita State in the NIT.

A crowd of 13,955, the largest of the season at Hilton Coliseum, saw Iowa State (17-13) take charge behind Barnes and Sullivan after Wichita State dominated the first half. The Cyclones are counting on those fans to return Friday, when they play host to Iowa in the next round.

Iowa advanced with a 62-60 victory Monday.

“I thought Wichita State did a great job of outdetermining us early, and the crowd really, really got us going throughout the game,” Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy said.

“The magic was definitely there tonight.”

Wichita State (18-12) led by as many as 11 points in the first half and was up 40-35 with less than 17 minutes remaining.

Then Barnes got hot.

He hit a three to cut the lead to 40-38, then raced up the court, stopped and made a three-pointer from NBA range to give Iowa State its first lead, 41-40.

Wichita State's Rob Kampman (33) defends Iowa State's Jackson Vroman. The Cyclones beat the Shockers, 76-65, in the NIT Wednesday in Ames, Iowa.

“After I made that first one, it kind of got my blood flowing,” Barnes said. “I came down again and thought, why not shoot the ball? It might go in, it might not. It went in and whew, that was a relief.”

Barnes finished with 21 points and Marcus Jefferson added 13, making it another tough night at Hilton for Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon. He was 0-4 on Iowa State’s floor when he played at Kansas University from 1983-87.

Paul Miller led Wichita State with 18 points and Fridge Holman scored 13.

Texas Tech 66, Nevada 54

Lubbock, Texas — Andre Emmett scored 18 points, helping Texas Tech beat Nevada. After Tech (19-12) built its largest lead of the game — 12 points — early in the second half, Nevada (18-14) used an 18-10 run to pull within four at 48-44 with 10:42 remaining. But back-to-back baskets by Emmett and Kasib Powell pushed Tech’s lead to eight.
