Spring Training Roundup: Mariners cut Wright after poor outing

Jamey Wright was cut after a poor start for Seattle.

Wright gave up six runs, seven hits, six walks and a wild pitch in 41¼3 innings, allowing a pair of homers to the Chicago Cubs in a 10-8 loss. He had a 8.35 ERA in 181¼3 innings in six appearances this spring.

“We had a drop-dead date, which was today,” Mariners general manager Pat Gillick said. “We thought it was fair to him to go since we didn’t think he was going to figure in our plans. There were a number of clubs here today watching him and there probably is major league interest in him.”

Cubs closer Antonio Alfonseca strained his right hamstring. Alfonseca slipped on the grass and fell down while fielding Randy Winn’s chopper in the fourth inning. An MRI was scheduled for today.
