Police unable to verify shooting witness’ story

Police say they can’t verify the story of an 18-year-old man who told The Journal-World that two men came into his apartment Sunday afternoon, fired a gun and took his brother by force.

“Nobody else will corroborate the story whatsoever,” Lt. David Cobb said.

Chris Ed-wards said that about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, two men came into his apartment at 508 Wis., and began arguing with his brother about money. According to Edwards’ description of events, one man pulled a handgun, and it went off as Edwards tried to knock it out of his hand.

Cobb said police found the alleged victim nearby.

“He said that nothing happened and that we were supposed to get out of his life,” Cobb said. “That’s the cleanest way to say it.”

Cobb said there was a gunshot fired in the apartment. Police later found the gun wrapped in some clothing behind a home in the 500 block of Florida Street.

Cobb said the gun had been reported stolen earlier in the day.

Edwards told the newspaper he was especially upset about the incident because he was friends with Quincy Sanders, 21, who was shot to death early Friday outside a duplex at 2603 Ridge Court.
