Democrats raise concern about war resolution

? The author of a proposed resolution declaring the Kansas House in “unified and absolute” support of President Bush and war in Iraq said Tuesday he would not rewrite it to meet Democrats’ concerns.

“My intention was not to get into the politics of it,” said Rep. Lee Tafanelli, R-Ozawkie, a lieutenant colonel in the Army National Guard. “It wasn’t done with a design to offend anyone.”

House leaders said the resolution would be introduced for an unrecorded vote immediately after hostilities begin in Iraq.

Tafanelli commands a unit of combat engineers from southeast Kansas, about 150 of whom are now serving in the Persian Gulf. His resolution expresses “unified and absolute” support for Bush and for U.S. troops.

Some Democrats wanted the resolution amended to reflect that not all House members were absolute in their support of the Republican president.

“There are those who support the troops 110 percent but may not agree with how the president got us there,” said House Minority Leader Dennis McKinney, D-Greensburg. “It’s not a question of patriotism.”
