Big 12 lands pair of No. 1 seeds

? Although the Big 12 Conference is still looking for its first national championship in men’s basketball, the league earned another type of respect Sunday by getting two No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament.

League tournament champion Oklahoma and South division rival Texas were the honorees, with Kansas getting bumped to a No. 2 seed despite winning the regular-season title.

In the final Associated Press poll, Texas was No. 3, Kansas was fourth and Oklahoma sixth. The Sooners moved up by winning the tournament for the third straight year, and the Longhorns held on despite losing their first game. The Jayhawks won once, then lost to Missouri in the semifinals.

The selection committee appeared to give Kansas a consolation prize by letting the Jayhawks join the Sooners in starting at the “pod” site in Oklahoma City. The Longhorns were shipped to Birmingham, Ala.

This is the fourth straight year the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee has given two No. 1s to the same conference. It’s the fifth time in six years and the ninth time since 1980.

The Big 12 matched the Southeastern Conference for the most selections with six. It’s the third straight year the Big 12 has had that many.

The others went to Missouri, which lost 49-47 to Oklahoma in the tournament finals Sunday; No. 23 Oklahoma State and Colorado.

Texas Tech wasn’t able to make it seven.

The Red Raiders were hoping to have parlayed a run to the semifinals of the conference tournament and the publicity of coach Bob Knight’s refusal to accept his salary into a second straight invitation. Instead, they’re headed to the NIT.

Oklahoma is a No. 1 seed for the first time since a three-year run ended in 1990. This is the highest seed Texas has ever received; the previous best was fourth.

OU was placed atop the East Region, and UT crowns the South.

The Longhorns will open Friday against the winner of the play-in game between UNC-Asheville and Texas Southern.

The Sooners start Thursday against South Carolina State. Kansas, seeded second in the Midwest, faces Utah State Thursday.

Missouri, seeded sixth in the Midwest, plays Southern Illinois Thursday in Indianapolis.

Oklahoma State, sixth in the East, plays Penn Friday in Boston.

Colorado, 10th in the South, plays Michigan State Friday in Tampa, Fla.
