Mixed media artist in landscape exhibition

Two mixed media pieces by Lawrence artist Barbara Solberg have been accepted into the Landscape III exhibition, now online at Period Gallery, www.periodgallery.com.

One of the works, “The Secret of Sun Mountain,” has received a Director’s Recognition Award.

Solberg works in a variety of media, including pastel, acrylics and oils. She also does lithography and monoprints. She often incorporates wood, stones, bones and shells in her pieces.

“I have always been inspired by the structures of landforms, using these elements as either principal subject matter or as metaphors for the mysterious inner landscape of the unconscious,” she said.

Solberg also has two pieces on display in the Lawrence Art Guild All Members Show at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Gardner native to play with U.S. Navy band

Topeka — A Gardner native will perform with the United States Navy Band at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in White Concert Hall at Washburn University.

Musician First Class Ruth J. Keehner, oboe, is the daughter of Robert and Angela Reimers of Gardner. She began her musical studies on piano at age 6 and added oboe at age 9. She graduated from Gardner-Edgerton High School in 1986 and received a bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University in 1990. She went on to earn her master’s degree in 1992 from the Julliard School in New York.

Before joining the Navy, she performed with the American Sinfonietta chamber orchestra on two European tours. Keehner joined the Navy in 1997.
