So far, Steinbrenner likes new players

? New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was looking for more than numbers from Japanese slugger Hideki Matsui.

“You got to take what’s in his heart,” Steinbrenner said after the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 3-0 Friday. “So far, you couldn’t be happier.”

Matsui went 2-for-4 and has 11 hits in 31 at-bats with two homers and eight RBIs in 10 games. He has struck out once in 31 at-bats.

Steinbrenner also saw his other new international star shine against the Devil Rays. Cuban right-hander Jose Contreras allowed two hits over five scoreless innings after struggling in his previous three starts.

There were no bold predictions about the upcoming season from Steinbrenner.

“It’s going to be a very good team,” Steinbrenner said. “It’s going to be a very interesting team because we’ve got new faces.”
