Calvary Temple Assembly of God

The Couriers Trio will be in concert at 6:30 p.m. March 23 at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

The trio is considered to be one of the top gospel singing groups in the world. The group will be at Calvary Temple for one service only. There is no charge to attend.

An all-church pot luck supper will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. Participants are asked to bring a covered dish, and friends are welcome to attend. Preaching of the Gospel will follow the meal.

Calvary Temple will honor its missionaries around the world and at home Sunday.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

WISH services — Worship Intended for the Severely Handicapped — will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon today at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

The men’s fellowship prayer breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. today.

A Bible study, “The Old Testament Made Easy,” led by MaryLou McGonigle and the Rev. Rick Burwick, is held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays.

The Sunday worship service schedule is: 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. (Sunday school hour) and 10:30 a.m.

There are three new adult classes in the Sunday school hour: “Romans, Finding Freedom in Christ,” Scott Walton; “Journey to Integrity,” Larry Powers; and “Kings of Israel & the Second Coming,” Dominic Dadzie.

A new Christian education program for preschool through fourth grade has begun in the church gym. Cindy Weese will teach it. There are also classes for fifth through 12th grades.

The Refuge Youth Group Rally is Wednesday. Pre-Rally prayer begins at 6 p.m. The Rally begins at 7 p.m., and this week will be movie night with free popcorn.

First United: Methodist Church

The Rev. Kelly Bender, senior pastor of Paradise Valley United Methodist Church in Phoenix, will be a guest preacher Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Bender served nine years as senior pastor of First United Methodist Church in Wichita, where he preached on Sundays to thousands of viewers across Kansas via television.

His sermon title is “Dogged Love.”

Lawrence Baptist Temple

Steve Trask, missionary to Brazil, will be a guest speaker at 10 a.m. Sunday at Lawrence Baptist Temple, 3201 W. 31st St.

Lawrence Seventh-Day Adventist Church

The Rev. John Mathews will present a free, spiritual seminar at 2 p.m. March 22 at Lawrence Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1000 Conn.

The three-hour seminar will discuss principles in Scripture that can guide participants through the maze and pressure that society puts on people to go into debt.

Plymouth Congregational Church

During Lent, Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., will be host to a couple of weekly groups.

Martha & Mary’s Way will meet at noon Wednesdays in the chapel through April 9, and a prayer group will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the chapel through April 16.

The Grinnel Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

Wednesdays during Lent are days of prayer for peace at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

Beginning after the 12:10 p.m. liturgy, the Blessed Sacrament will be available in the church for adoration and prayer. The rosary will be prayed on each hour during the afternoon and end with 7 p.m. Mass for Peace.

There will be a listening and discussion session from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The session will focus on Catholics who are hurting because of being away from sacraments or from the church due to marriage outside the church.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The Rev. Darrel Proffitt, senior pastor, will share the message “The Five Conditions of Answered Prayer” at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday worship services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The lenten series “Punching Holes in the Darkness” continues at 6 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a supper, fellowship, worship, reflection and prayer.

Sarah Knoll, youth coordinator, is forming a group for those wanting to receive Confirmation in April 2003. Enrollment is under way.

A group to support married couples will meet Thursdays at the church. The topic this week is creating special ways to communicate with your partner.

Trinity Episcopal Church

The Rev. Lewis Johnson, a retired Episcopal priest and Trinity parishioner, and Alison Atkins, vocal music instructor, will offer lector/intercessor training at 9 a.m. Saturday in the nave of Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Reading of Scripture plays a vital role in the worship at Trinity, and the training will help with projection, diction and general presentation.

The Rev. George Wiley, professor of religious studies at Baker University and parishioner at Trinity, will lead the adult forum at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. He will speak on “Two Christian Perspectives on War,” with a discussion of “just-war theory” and Christian non-violence.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “Lenten Reflections,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

It will be followed by a program, “The Mormons and the Transformation of the Community of Christ,” presented from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. by Michael Riggs.

Unity Church of Lawrence

Unity Church, 901 Madeline Lane, will hold its last family night potluck of the season at 6:15 p.m. April 11.

West Side Presbyterian Church

“Peter Learns a Hard Lesson,” based on Mark 8:31-38, will be the sermon by the Rev. Jay Gideon for the second week of Lent at the 11 a.m. Sunday service at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Team Three of the deacon’s committee will have the 3 p.m. Sunday service on the second floor of Presbyterian Manor, followed by the regular deacon’s meeting at 4 p.m. at the church.

The second in a series of the Lenten Bible Study by James Harnish, “Dying to Live,” will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. A light snack will be served.

Lydia Circle will meet Wednesday morning, and Martha Circle will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

March 23 has been designated “Youth Sunday,” and the church’s young people have been preparing for this special event.
