? Brandon Berger was 3-for-5 with a home run, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 12-3 victory Friday over the San Diego Padres.

Berger also had two doubles, three RBIs and scored three runs.

Kansas City took advantage of five San Diego errors to score five unearned runs. The Royals led 4-3 through seven, then scored eight runs in the final two frames.

Padres shortstop Donaldo Mendez made three errors in the last two innings. Padres reliever Luther Hackman allowed five runs — three earned — while getting only one out in the ninth.

Royals starter Runelvys Hernandez (1-0) allowed three runs, five hits and a walk in four innings.

Padres starter Jake Peavy (0-3) allowed four runs, eight hits and a hit batter in four innings.

Kansas City’s Desi Relaford went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Michael Tucker was 2-for-3 and had a stolen base.

San Diego’s Ramon Vazquez was 2-for-2 and had a sacrifice fly. Mark Kotsay hit his first home run of the spring, a fourth-inning leadoff shot against Hernandez.

Before the game, the Royals claimed outfielder Rontrez Johnson on waivers. The Padres, meanwhile, lost utilityman Jose Flores to the Athletics on waivers. San Diego traded pitcher Buddy Hernandez to Oakland to get Flores in December.
