James O. Smith

Memorial services for James O. Smith, 76, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Smith died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 31, 1926, in Oklahoma City, the son of Otis E. and Emma V. (Howard) Smith. He graduated from Kansas University with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology in 1949 and received a master’s degree from KU in 1950.

Mr. Smith served in the Army in Korea at the end of World War II. He was a pharmaceutical representative for Ciba Pharmaceutical Co. for 35 years. Before that, he had worked in oncology research at Kansas University Medical Center.

He married Marjorie Colbert on June 5, 1949, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Janet Calkins, Naperville, Ill., Laura Nutt, Lawrence, and Carol Stowers, Shawnee; three sons, Scott, Independence, Kan., Thomas, Hanlontown, Iowa, and Timothy, Overland Park, and 11 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends before and after the service at the mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to Health Care Access of Lawrence, sent in care of the mortuary.
