IN 1978

A big increase in new manufacturing jobs helped push the nation’s jobless rate down to 6.1 percent in February, and the Kansas rate was less than 4 percent. In the Lawrence area, officials estimated the unemployment rate here might be at 3.5 percent, one of the lowest figures in the nation.

IN 1903

From the Lawrence Daily World of March 10, 1903: “It is now up to the people of Lawrence to vote on and, we trust, for the Carnegie library on April 7. It has taken more than a year to get this thing in shape, and at least it is in a fair way to be accomplished. We do not feel that any argument is necessary. There should be only one sentiment in this town, and that should be ‘for’ the library.”
