Principal suspended after alleged assaults

? The Kansas City school district suspended the principal of a school where a male student reported being sexually and physically assaulted in a bathroom by two other boys.

Rodney Hare, principal of East Elementary School, was suspended without pay while the district investigates why school employees were slow to notify authorities about the alleged assaults.

One of the school’s vice principals also was suspended with pay, the district said Friday.

The student told police he was sexually and physically assaulted by two other boys in a school bathroom for a number of weeks through Feb. 19. The police were called Feb. 20 to the school, but police records indicate some East staff members knew about the allegations as early as Feb. 7.

State law requires school administrators to immediately report sexual assaults to police.

Supt. Bernard Taylor Jr. said he was “deeply disturbed” about the allegations.

“Be assured that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against any school district staff who failed to meet their duty to protect students,” Taylor said in a letter to parents Friday.
