Indians win two at tourney

? Haskell Indian Nations University’s softball team earned a pair of victories in its first two games Saturday at the Kansas Wesleyan Tournament.

In the first game, Kim DeRoin hit a grand slam and struck out six batters in a 9-0 victory over Graceland. Terri Slinkey added a home run and single and scored two runs.

The Indians cruised in the second game. DeRoin struck out four and pitched a complete-game one-hitter in a 10-0 victory over Mount Mercy (Iowa). Slinkey went 3-for-3 with a home run and triple and scored three runs, and DeRoin had two RBIs.

Haskell (2-0) meets Baker in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Baldwin.

“I was excited what we did offensively,” coach Gary Tanner said.

Haskell had its first 12 games rained out or snowed out.

“We were just wanting to play,” Tanner said. “We let off some steam today.”
