Baylor stuns Texas Tech

Knight fumes after 74-68 loss worsens Red Raiders' slump

? Finally incensed from repeatedly calling for the ball and not getting it, Lawrence Roberts didn’t care who knew he was frustrated.

“I’m in the post, man,” Roberts yelled at Baylor teammate Terrance Thomas.

Thomas told him to “shut up.”

But the Bears eventually did get Roberts the ball, and the 6-foot-9 forward scored seven of his 28 points in the final two minutes as Baylor overcame a long second-half shooting drought to hold off slumping Texas Tech, 74-68, Saturday.

“Lawrence is a tremendous motivator,” Baylor coach Dave Bliss said. “He’s had some tough games and gotten down, but Lawrence keeps everyone on an even keel.”

Baylor (14-13 overall, 5-11 Big 12 Conference) built a 42-26 second-half lead before Andre Emmett, the Big 12’s leading scorer, brought Tech back to take a 46-45 lead with 7:31 left.

Tech (16-11, 6-10) rallied with help from Baylor, which went almost 12 minutes without a field goal.

Texas Tech coach Bobby Knight yells at official Eddie Jackson in the Red Raiders' 74-68 loss to Baylor. Tech fell Saturday in Waco, Texas.

But Baylor quickly retook the lead on free throws by R.T. Guinn and was in control the rest of the way.

Guinn and Roberts helped put the game out of reach with back-to-back three-pointers that gave Baylor a 66-61 lead with 1:30 left. Baylor went 7-of-8 from the line in the final three minutes to seal the victory. Guinn added 17 points and eight rebounds.

“We got behind and were able to come back, but we couldn’t finish,” Texas Tech Bobby Knight said in a testy postgame press conference that lasted about two minutes. “It has been that pattern for our team all year.”

The Red Raiders finished the regular season with three straight losses.

Tech probably needs a couple of wins in this week’s Big 12 tournament for a slim chance at a second straight NCAA Tournament under Knight.
