Mariners squeak past Royals, 8-7

? Outfielder Mark Quinn re-injured his hamstring in the Kansas City Royals’ 8-7 loss Monday to the Seattle Mariners.

Royals second baseman Carlos Febles and prospect David DeJesus also left the game because of injuries.

Quinn went on the disabled list last June 8 because of a left hamstring injury and did not play the rest of the season. He hurt his hamstring while running to first base to end the first.

“We need to watch him closely and see how he’s going to come back,” manager Tony Pena said.

Quinn also went on the disabled list in 2001 because of a left hamstring injury.

Febles was hit on the left hand by a pitch while leading off the game against Joel Pineiro. X-rays were negative, but he has swelling in the last three fingers.

“It’s just a bruise. It’s no big deal, nothing broken,” Febles said. “I can move it, it is just a little sore.”

Pena said the injuries were not serious, but both players would sit today against Oakland.

DeJesus, the Royals’ minor-league player of the year for 2002, injured his right shoulder diving for Jamal Strong’s triple in the seventh. He was taken for X-rays and the team will know more today.
