Food Network offers tricks behind treats

When I was young, my friends and I were obsessed with a candy called Zotz. While it looked like any hard candy lozenge, Zotz contained a tiny quantity of baking powder that exploded in your mouth when you least expected it. Zotz gave way to Pop Rocks, the infamous ’70s treat, and a new generation of wacky candies explored on tonight’s episode of “Unwrapped” (8 p.m., Food Network). Former game-show host Mark Sommers visits candy factories and interviews children and adults eating glow-in-the-dark ice pops, jelly beans that taste like dirt, candy confected to look like dog food (wrapped in its own little bowl), and other gross and explosive treats that put my old Zotz to shame.

Future Monday-night episodes of “Unwrapped” will explore favorite movie goodies (July 7), airline food (July 14) and America’s most spectacular birthday cakes (Aug. 11).

Burned by their past reliance on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” the ABC network has used the summer rerun period to allow viewers to get familiar with their sitcoms. Hence tonight’s four-peat of “8 Simple Rules” (ABC). On four consecutive episodes, Paul becomes the primary parent (7 p.m.), driver’s mis-education (7:30 p.m.), a test of wills (8 p.m.), and Bridget fancies the son of Paul’s boss (8:30 p.m.).

The folks at the network for men haven’t figured out a new name yet, but they know what they like. “100 Most Irresistible Women” (10 p.m., TNN) counts down a list that includes both the obvious eye-candy (No. 15, Tyra Banks) and some surprising choices.
